Hot Water Tank – Fire Damage
Fire Damaged Gas Controller
Flow Testing the Gas Valve
Liebert Engineering, Inc., was hired as the Lead Investigator for inspection and testing of an L.P. gas-fired hot water heater that was destroyed in a storeroom fire. Fire investiga- tors felt the hot water heater malfunctioned and caused the fire through roll-out or other mechanism. Following an initial site inspection, we removed the evidence and secured it for further cause and origin evaluation and testing.
Subsequent destructive examination and testing was conducted in order to determine whether a flame roll-out or other gas flame source ignited nearby combustible materials. Destructive inspection and testing of the gas line and valve, power vent, burner, mechanical combustion air shutter, wiring, and controls discounted the possibility of a malfunction or product defect. Therefore, it was determined that the fire origin was external to the water heater.
